Bahrain Jurists Society granted “Consultative Status with ECOSOC”

July 22, 2021

Chairman of the Bahrain Jurists Society (BJS), Dr. Abduljabbar Ahmed Al-Tayeb, has stated that the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) approved, during its meeting today, the recommendation issued by the UN NGOs’ Committee on May 21, 2021, on granting the Bahrain Jurists Society the “Consultative Status”, which reflects the efficiency of the role played by BJS over the past years.

Al-Tayeb asserted that the decision has made BJS a globally-recognised legal entity, which will entitle its data, reports and remarks to be approved internationally, as they will be given priority over those issued by others while judging the human rights situation in the kingdom.

Al-Tayeb added that under the “Consultative Status”, the Bahrain Jurists Society shall have the right to participate in the meetings of the ECOSOC, the Human Rights Council, contract committee, among other specialised UN agencies and organisations.

It may also send shadow reports on all issues related to the UN’s fields of work, as well as issue oral or written statements during the meetings of the Human Rights Council and those of ECOSOC.

It will also have the right to hold events at the UN headquarters.

Dr. Al-Tayeb said that BJS is the first Bahraini association to receive the “Consultative Status”, noting that the move reflects the success of the Bahraini civil society organisations in developing their roles, and augurs a new era of popular human rights diplomacy, which will strengthen the guarantors and rights embedded in the Reform Project spearheaded by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

He affirmed that the Bahrain Jurists Society believes that HM the King has contributed to consolidating, preserving and protecting human rights and freedoms in Bahrain.
