Housing Minister attends ECOSOC meeting

Manama, Apr.21 (BNA): Housing Minister Basem bin Yacoub Al Hamer took part in the special meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

The virtual session discussed the issue of sustainable urbanization and the implementation of the new urban agenda.

In attendance wered ECOSOC President Collen Vixen Kelapile, President of the 76th session of the UN General Assembly Abdulla Shahid and UN Deputy Secretary General Amina J. Mohammed.

Addressing the virtual meeting, the minister said that Bahrain has given the priority to implementation of the New Urban Agenda and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals in its governmental programmes.

He noted the drive has contributed to achieving great progress in many related sectors, which was included in the second voluntary national report that was prepared to highlight the Bahrain’s efforts to achieve sustainable development goals.

He highlighted Bahrain’s strides in terms of implementing the new urban agenda, and cooperating with the United Nations Human Settlements Program to achieve the sustainable development goals.

He noted Bahrain’s signing of the framework of strategic and sustainable cooperation with the United Nations in June of last year, describing the step as a great achievement, which reflects the current and future opportunities for cooperation between the government and the UN and its mutual commitment to development priorities in Bahrain.

He pointed out the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister to allocate BD4.5 billion to maintain economic and social stability as part of measures aimed to combat the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
