Oil Minister opens Pre-COP 27 workshop

Manama, Sept. 11 (BNA): Oil and Environment Minister, Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Daina, has asserted that Bahrain attaches great importance to the environment sector thanks to the ongoing support of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the constant follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

He indicated that the kingdom will continue launching policies to protect and sustain environmental and natural resources, as well as back the concerted international efforts to address the various phenomena of climate and environmental changes to achieve sustainable development goals.

The minister made the statements during the opening session of the preparatory workshop organised by the Supreme Council for Environment in cooperation with a number of supporting entities, with the aim of raising the readiness of the kingdom's delegation to the 27th session of the Conference of the States Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 27), set to be held in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, in November.

Dr. Bin Dina highlighted to the directives of the Personal Representative of HM the King, and President of the Supreme Council for the Environment, His Highness Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, regarding the importance of carrying on efforts to fulfill the obligations of the Kingdom related to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and to develop programmes and plans to protect the environment in various sectors, in the interests of the nation and the citizens.

The minister asserted that the two-day workshop aims to prepare the national competencies and ensure their effective participation in COP 27.

He stressed Bahrain's keenness to unify international efforts aimed at confronting climate change and adapting to its impacts, as reflected in its effective role and participation in various environment-related international gatherings, particularly its endeavours to implement the provisions of the Paris Climate Agreement.

He added that the delegation to COP 27 will inform the other delegations about the kingdom's major role in enhancing international environmental cooperation, as well as shed light on its efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change, through legal legislation, climate initiatives and national projects adopted by the Kingdom within the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030.

The Pre-COP 27 workshop, which brings together climate, environment and renewable energy experts and specialists, features lectures and panel sessions focusing on climate change, Bahrain's stance on the issue of climate change, and the most important achievements made by the Kingdom in the field of mitigating the effects of climate change and adapting to it. It will also review the efforts of Bahrain in preserving the environment and climate in order to achieve sustainable development goals.
