Bahrain opens 75-year old water garden after major revamp

Bahrain has opened doors of its iconic Water Garden project in capital Manama to the public following a major revamp which will now see several new features within the 75-year-old leisure facility.
It was officially inaugurated by Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King and National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD) Consultative Council President at a key ceremony held yesterday (January 16), reported BNA.
Following the revamp, the iconic Water Garden features a botanical garden, two lakes, family spaces, children’s play areas, a wooden bridge, a sports area as well as lot of green spaces.
Speaking on the occasion, Princess Sabeeka said: 'This public park, which was set up in 1948, is linked to the national memory as a heritage facility, a recreational outlet, and a tourist destination.'
She commended the government’s drive to set up gardens and parks, and to preserve plant wealth and natural reserves as part of strategies to ensure the sustainability of the development the agricultural sector.
She also hailed national efforts to expand agricultural and green areas in proportion to the urban zones across the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Princess Sabeeka highlighted HM the King’s directives which are implemented by the government, headed by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister to develop the agricultural sector as one of the tributaries of the national economy.
She also commended the efforts of both the public and private sector institutions in the revamp of the iconic landmark and expand the green areas as part of the project.
Addressing the gathering, Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Minister Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak
highlighted the kingdom's plans to develop public gardens, parks and recreational venues, in light of the comprehensive development led by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, with the follow up of HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, said the BNA report.
Al Mubarak lauded the ministries, government institutions, the Capital Municipality Council, and the National Initiative for Agricultural Development for their contribution to the project.
He also thanked the Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco) for undertaking the management of maintenance operations for the park and its facilities after its opening today.
